大学での理系ライティング授業がオンラインになって以来、「ウォームアップ」の準備をこれまでよりも頻回に行っています。
オンラインは無音で緊張感もあるので、「これから英語を学ぶ」というウォーミングアップが必要と感じるためです。
また、オンラインの授業は英作の提出も資料の共有も対面よりもスムーズなので、多めの内容がカバーできますから、90分という限られた授業の中でもウォームアップに使う時間を捻出しやすい。
話題性のあるものや、理系の内容や、様々な短い動画を使います。
今回は少し趣向を変えて、授業の内容に関連するもの。
「マニュアルの作成」を題材にして行った授業にて、電動歯ブラシの使い方の1分動画にしました。

How to brush your teeth with an electric toothbrush?
1度流して内容や画像を把握。
2回目はYouTubeの速度調整機能で0.75倍に落として、シャドウイング。
音声に飽きたら、原稿をスライド表示して、動詞ほかのボキャブラリーを確認。
原稿を見ることで「聞こえない」原因を探ってもらうこともできます。音のつながりだったり、知らない単語だったり。

Move the brush head slowly from tooth to tooth along the gumline, spending a few seconds on each tooth surface. Brush the gum, as well as the teeth. First the outsides. ＊原稿の作成は、今は自分自身がシャドウイングをして、スマホの音声認識機能をオンにして、スマホに書き起こさせています。それをPCにメールで送り、不具合をタイプで直します。
聞き取って書き起こしていた時代から比較すると、授業の準備効率は大きく上がりました。
使用音声にはテキストではなく生の題材を使ってきましたが、昔は音声や動画の抽出からウォームアップ資料の準備まで、かなり大変でした。今は色々な動画が使えるのでとても便利。
YouTube動画は授業中に広告が入って欲しくないのでPremium会員になったら、日々の自分自身のシャドウイングも効率化して快適。
さて、取り上げた単語は次の通り。

かなり充実したボキャブラリー。
文法項目も実はポイント満載で個人的にはexcitingですが（前置詞とか冠詞・単複とか）、その「熱」は押さえ気味にして授業をしています。
製品に関する動画はコンパクトでいいな、と思います。
電動歯ブラシの動画をいくつか見ると出てくるのがquadrant（4分の1の領域を磨きましょう、といった説明）。quadrantは一般的な単語であることを確認。
学生の感想：
シャドウイングをするとき、今日は落ちついてできたので、発音しながら内容を理解していくことができた。
私：
よかった。英語学習には「成功体験」が必須と考えています。「わからなくて心砕かれた」という体験よりも、「できた」や「少しずつできるようになってきた」と思ってもらえる授業を目指したい。
