最近、毎日少しでも時間を作って、自然科学誌Natureより、英文を個人の目的で収集していました。とても、勉強になります。
前からNatureを読むのは好きでしたが、今回、英文を収集しながら、その「魅力」に、とりつかれています。
もう危険なくらいに、Natureの英文に、心が入りこんでいます。
●動名詞による無生物主語のSVO

主語と動詞に焦点を当てただけでも、こんなに素晴らしいのですが、それ以外の他の細かい表現についても、語り出すと、きっとかなりの時間を、かけてしまうと思います。(セミナーができそう・・・。)
「SVO」を中心として、SV、SVO、SVC、この3つの英文の組み立て方法が、重要です。
シンプルイングリッシュの、重要ポイントです。
なお、英文を精査するとき、「この表現はまねをしよう」「この表現は、自分は使わないようにしよう」という自分の判断基準が確立すると、英文を見るときの世界が変わります。
そしてどんどん、自分の指針にあった表現を、ぶれることなく、吸収していくことができるようになると思います。
また、細かいことに立ち止まらず、大ざっぱに、どんどん良い表現を吸収していくことが可能になり、英語ライティング力の向上に役立つと思います。
(「英語ライティングの向上」といえば、5月28日の工業英検1級、みんな、どうだったかな。今回は試験形式が新しくなり、リピーター受験者の方にも何らかの新しいスタートとなると良いのですが・・・)
さて私の判断基準は、
- 正確、明確、簡潔であること
- 読み手のための英語であること
という大きな軸に加えて、
- 自分は非ネイティブであること、ネイティブのみならず、世界のノンネイティブに伝わる、勤勉なノンネイティブ(特に日本人)ならではの英語、つまりノンネイティブによる高品質英語、を目指すこと
また、
- できるだけ正式に表現すること、カジュアルに崩すのは、いつでもできることなので、まずは、どこにでも出せる正式な表現を心がけること
これらを心に留めて、取捨選択をしながらNature誌を読むと、本当に、ドキドキと、心が「ときめき」はじめます。
個人的に、今の自分の仕事についてとてもありがたいと思うことは、損得も考えず、誰に対する気兼ねもなく、ただ心にしたがい、興味にしたがい、仕事を進めていけるということ。
勉強が仕事であって、仕事が勉強である。これは、本当に、ありがたいことです。
